The present study aims at exploring Korean mother’s beliefs on socialization of child emotion. The socialization of emotions is influenced by cultural meaning systems for the expression and regulation of emotions (Trommsdorff & Rothbaum, 2008; Trommsdorff & Friedlmeier, 2010). Mothers’ sensitivity is assumed to promote culturally valued ways of children’s emotion expression. Previous studies on emotion have shown cultural differences in the meaning of maternal sensitivity between Western and East Asian culture. In Western culture where independence is emphasized, emotional expression is highly valued and open expression of emotions is more encouraged. Thus a mother expects her child to express needs and emotions openly to which she responds promptly (i.e. reactive sensitivity). In contrast, in Asian culture where interdependence is valued, open expression of emotion is socially undesirable. Thus, a mother tries to anticipate her child’s needs based on subtle or situational factors (i.e. proactive sensitivity) and open expression of emotion is likely discouraged. We discuss these issues using Korean data to address relations between mothers’ beliefs about sensitivity, their reactions to their children’s emotion expression (both negative and positive) and children’s emotion regulation. To date, no studies have directly assessed maternal beliefs about emotion socialization and the relations between maternal sensitivity, e.g.,mother`s reactions to her child`s expression and regulation of emotions.
Participants of this study were 100 mothers in Seoul, Korea, whose children were between 6 and 7 years old. In order to assess mothers’ beliefs about sensitivity, vignettes employing a forced-choice format were presented through individual interviews (Rothbaum et al., 2006). Mothers’ self reported reactions to their children’s negative emotions were assessed with 6 subscales of CCNES (Fabes et al., 2002). Mothers’ reactions to their children’s positive emotions were assessed using short version of PRCPS (Ladouceur et al., 2002). Child emotion regulation was assessed using ERC (Shield & Cicchetti, 1997) reported by mothers.
Results of the current study revealed: 1) Maternal sensitivity differed depending on the situation. Specifically, mothers more often showed reactive sensitivity in the situation when her child is (only slightly) hurt; they showed more often proactive sensitivity when their child is unhappy. 2) Regarding to mothers’ reaction to child`s negative emotion, Emotion Focused or Problem Focused reactions were most common whereas stress reactions or minimization reactions were least common. 3) Regarding mothers’ reaction to child positive emotion, mothers more often asked their child (and explained why) not to express their positive emotion in public. 4) Mothers’ reactions were significantly related to child`s emotion regulation. In specific, the higher problem- or emotion-focused reactions mothers endorsed, the higher emotion regulation children showed. The reasons mothers provide for their reactions give insight into their cultural beliefs, including socialization goals and practices. These findings are discussed focusing on the culture-specific context.
