The numbers, sizes, shapes and karyogypes of the somatic chromosome in each species of Iridaceae were compared. The basic chomosome numbers (x) of six species were as follows : I. ensata, X=12; Belamcanda chinensis, I. koreana, and I. tectorum, X=16; I. pseudacorus, X=17 and I. setosa, X=19. All taxa studied here had diploid chromosomes.
