      In today's world, it is sure that color is becoming a more and more important part of our artificial environment. In architecture, particularly large housing estates, color is no longer just an afterthougt, a decorative device; it has become an essential part of our lives.
      The later eighties were particularly important in Korea for the development of research in the field of environmental color, because the boom in the building of large scale apartments offered very special opportunities for exploring the role of color in housing and town amenities. However, it is only recently that color has been practically introduced into environment in Pusan, and even then quite imperfectly yet. In this respect, an analysis of present situation is valuable to form the basis of all subsequent planning.
      This study aims to find out the characteristic features of high-rise 194 apartment buildings in the Kumjeong-gu area of Pusan by analyzing their exterior coloring.
      The conclusion is as follows.
      (1) On the whole, dominant colors are limited to orange nearly approaching white.
      (2) Sub-colors have various hue except purpule with the range of 6-9 Munsell value and 1-6 Munsell chroma.
      (3) Accent colors can be classified into two kinds of hue, cool color and warm color with the range of 4-8.5 Munsell value and 1.5-8 Munsell chrome.
      (4) Sub-colors are similar in hue to the dominant colors, therefore color ranges are extremely monotonous. But, in a few case, the monotonousness is broken by accent colors with contrasting hue.
      (5) Sub-colors show that Munsell value is higher than dominant colors by 1.5 with Munsell chrome lower by 2, or Munsell value is lower than dominant colors by 1-2 with Munsell chrome higher by 2, while accent colors show that Munsell value is lower than dominant colors by 1-3 with Munsell chrome higher by 2-5.
