Alloxan monohydrate administered intravenously to mice and rabbits in doses of 50 or 100mg/Kg caused to be selectively taken up by the insulin-producing β-cell of the pancreas and elevation of the blood glucese levels.
Water extract of Rehmanniae Rhizoma(RGLW) administered intraperitoneally or per oral 30 minutes prior to allovan prevented these diabetogenic actions.
RGLW, a widly used crud drugs, was chosen because it decrease blood glucose.
The data of the present study indicate that RGLW can protect against the diabetogenic action of alloxan.
