‘섬 정체성(Island Identity)’의 문화적 특징과 의미 - ‘도서성(島嶼性, insularity)’과 ‘섬성(섬性, islandness)’의 공존 가능성에 관한 탐색 - = The Cultural Characteristics and Meanings of ‘Island Identity’- Focusing on the Coexistence of the Concept of Insularity and that of Islandness -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 ‘섬 정체성(island identity)’ 개념의 문화적 특징과 의미를 ‘도서성(島嶼性, insularity)’과 ‘섬성(섬性, islandness)’의 개념 정의와 그 활용의 측면에서 살펴보기 위한 탐색적 연구의 일환으로 작성된 것이다. 이를 위해 이 글에서는 섬 인문지형과 섬 수용력(carrying capacity), 그리고 지속가능성(sustainability)이라는 개념을 상호 관련지음으로써 이러한 개념들 사이의 상호 관련성을 중심으로 ‘섬 정체성’ 개념의 문화적 의미를 중점적으로 다룬다.
오늘날 ‘섬 정체성’의 문화적 특징과 의미를 섬사람들의 관점에서 그들의 삶의 사회문화적, 역사적 조건과 상황을 아울러 고려하여 맥락적으로 이해하기 위해선, 섬과 바다의 자연적, 지리적 고립성(폐쇄성)과 문화적, 역사적 소통성(개방성)의 뜻을 모두 담아낼 수 있는 도서성(insularity) 개념과 섬성(islandness) 개념의 의미가 공존하고 공생할 수 있는 방향으로 인식론적, 존재론적 전회를 넘어 관계론적 전회로의 대전환을 이뤄내야 할 시점에 와 있다는 점을 적확하게 인지하고, 그에 따른 실천 전략과 비전을 구축해야 할 것이다. 이 연구는 이러한 측면에 착안하여 ‘섬 정체성’ 개념의 문화적 특징과 의미를 도서성과 섬성의 상호 공존과 공생의 관점에서 살펴본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article was written as part of an exploratory study to examine the cultural characteristics and meanings of the concept of ‘island identity’ in terms of the definitions and uses of the concepts of ‘insularity’ and ‘islandness.’ To this end, this article focuses on the cultural meaning of the concept of ‘island identity’ by interlinking the concepts of island humanities terrain, island carrying capacity, and sustainability, and by centering on the interrelationship among these concepts.
In order to understand the cultural characteristics and meanings of ‘island identity’ recently in a contextual way from the perspective of the islanders, I intend to emphasize to take into account the socio-cultural and historical conditions and circumstances of their lives, the natural and geographical isolation (closeness) of the islands and the sea and the cultural and historical communication (openness) of the islands, and the meanings of the concepts of ‘insularity’ and ‘islandness’ can coexist and coexist in a direction that transcends epistemological and ontological turns to a relational turn. And we must accurately recognize this aspect, and try to build practical strategies and visions accordingly. In this sense, this article focuses on these aspects and examines the cultural characteristics and meanings of the concept of ‘island identity’ from the perspective of the mutual coexistence and symbiosis of ‘insularity’ and ‘islandness’.
