미셸 푸코 사회이론의 역설과 그 역설의 방법론적 발생 맥락 = 뒤르켐 사회학 방법론과의 연관성을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

푸코의 사회이론은 사회적 삶의 제 영역들을 우연성의 지평에서 이루어지는 힘들 사이의 투쟁이라는 관점에서 접근함으로써, 익숙했던 기존의 사유방식을 전복하고 도발적으로 새로운 관점, 새로운 사유방식들을 제시한다. 하지만 푸코의 사회이론은 결국 애초에 그것이 토대를 두고 있던 투쟁과 우연성 모델과는 상반되는 일종의 유사 기능주의 또는 유사 체계이론으로 흐르는 경향을 보이면서, 우연성과 힘들 사이의 투쟁과 경합이 시야에서 사라진 채, 권력의 폐쇄적 자기 생산 시스템만이 남게 되는 역설로 귀결된다. 이 연구는 이러한 역설이 발생하는 이유를 ‘외부의 사유’라는 푸코의 방법론적 전략이 가진 필연적 한계에서 찾고, 그 역설의 구조를 이론적으로 해명한다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 푸코의 사회이론을 큰 틀에서 뒤르켐 사회학의 전통에 위치시키고, 푸코의 방법론과 뒤르켐의 방법론이 공유하는 지점과 갈라지는 지점을 확인해봄으로써, 푸코 사회이론의 방법론적 전략의 한계를 선명하게 드러낸다. 푸코의 사회이론과 뒤르켐의 사회이론은 외부의 사유라고 불릴만한 방법론적 전략을 공유한다. 하지만 외부의 사유를 위해 푸코는 단수 주체, 복수의 주체, 초월적 보편주체, 세 차원의 주체 범주 일반을 제거함으로써 사물의 자기관계의 익명적 체계논리에 주목하는 체계통합의 사회이론으로 나아간 반면, 뒤르켐은 복수의 주체들이 만들어내는 도덕 · 규범의 사회구성적 차원에 주목함으로써 규범적 사회통합의 사회이론으로 나아갈 수 있었다. 이 연구는 사회의 조직화 및 행위의 조정원리로서 체계통합 메커니즘과 사회통합 메커니즘을 구분하면서, 체계통합에 초점을 두고 있는 푸코의 사회이론은 복수의 주체들이 만들어내는 규범적 사회구성 내지 행위조정이라는 사회통합 차원을 정당하게 고려하지 못하고 있다는 한계가 있다는 점을 지적한다. 이런 관점에서 이 글은 푸코 사회이론의 장점인 권력의 체계통합 메커니즘에 대한 치밀한 분석과 뒤르켐의 사회이론이 제공하는 복수의 주체들이 만들어내는 규범적 사회구성이라는 사회통합의 측면 모두를 고려할 수 있는 관점주의적 이원론의 이론 전략이 필요하다는 점을 주장한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Michel Foucault analyzes social domains in terms of contingency and struggles between diverse forces. However, paradoxically, his social theory arrives at a quasi-functionalist or quasi-system theory in which the contingency and the struggles disappear from sight and thereby only a self-regulatory system of power remains. I demonstrate that the paradox of Foucault’s social theory is derived from his methodological strategy, ‘thought of outside.’ From this perspective, I elucidate theoretical contexts of the paradox. To clarify how Foucault’s social theory arrives at the paradox, I situate Foucault’s social theory within the tradition of Durkheimian sociology, and then explore convergence and divergence between Foucault’s methodology and Durkheim’s methodology. Both Foucault’s social theory and Durkheim’s sociological theory share the similar methodological strategy that can be called ‘thought of outside.’ However, on the one hand, removing all types of subject categories such as singular subject, plural subjects and transcendental subject, the former takes the shape of quasi-system theory that exclusively pays attention to anonymous relationship between things. On the other hand, the latter takes the shape of normative social theory, by paying attention to the dimension of plural subjects’ moral and normative constitution of the society. Contrary to Durkheim’s sociological theory, Foucault’s social theory has a limitation in that it unjustly disregards collective subjects’ normative constitution of the society. However, Foucault’s social theory has a unique advantage in that it offers close and elaborate analyses of power mechanisms. Thus, I argue that the perspective dualism from which one can evenly consider both the system dynamic of power and the normative construction of the society is required. In Lockwood’s terminology, from the perspective dualism, one consider both system integration and social integration.
