제임스 터렐과 빌 비올라의 작품 안에서 감동과 정화 = The Emotion and catharsis in works of James Turrell and Bill Viola

Within artworks, on the basis of our aesthetic concept and experiences, our sense of emotional awareness is active when it receives such an impact on the beauty of such sentences, poem, music, image, or dance. Represented on the aesthetic impression, is a term that is related to emotions and reactions based on beauty. By looking at the artworks, spectators can feel the emotional experiences that appear different expressing individual associated with knowledge. Furthermore, the terms used in the aesthetic sense are influenced by historical, philosophical background of each country that is represented by a unique langage of the country. Western thinkers are studying about the feelings that make up the sensory perception in the aesthetic viewpoint. In the 『Poetics』, Aristotle said a reflection of mental agitation of the mind is at the center of the tragedy, using the expression ‘the catharsis of such emotions’. This paper analyzes the two videos and one installation, looks to terms that are associated with ‘감 gam (feeling)’ word that uses to express the variety of Korean feeling and sensibility as emotions, sentiment, sense, etc. Starting with such expression of sentiments, we approach the meaning of emotions, empathy, consensus, 이심전심 is imjunsim( heart to heart, mind to mind), purification, and the concept of ‘catharsis’, and finally find out the relevance of the meaning of purification and essence of water. First, the installation work of James Turrell, <Ganzfeld APANI>, in a space filled with a dazzling light, it appears changes in the sensibilities of spectators experienced through ours five senses. This symbol of light means the natural ligtht, but also, inner light, that is the ligtht of understanding in ourselves. Delicate sensibilities of experi-ences is expressed in a variety of different feelings, which I can be found in video works of Bill Viola, <The Quintet of the Astonished>. This video is screened very slowly and can be read as actor’s expressions that the change due to unforeseen circumstances. And, in the another video works of Bill Viola <Three Woman>, through screened very slowly, when the three woman passes through ‘thin veil with water’, the water is meaning of pure, purifying, baptism and reminds of the diverse different sense of duality by the converting of color when the black and white images of low-quality are converted to the color images of crisp unforeseen high-definition. Emotions are an expression of the mind that appear, depending on what phenomenon or situation. Our sensibility moving like waves of water and water full inside ours body, is their a certain correlation with each other? Water follows exactly the shape of bowls as it’s influenced by natural phenomena. Water thus circuit constantly and changing it’s appearance, but in fact, the nature of water does not change. The meaning of water whose purified himself, like a lotus symbolize the pure blooms in the mud pond, connected with the thinking of Zen(선 seon 禪) and Dao (tao, 도 do 道). Bowl of the mind resembles pure water and purified. Recognize the nature of water, and we think of the signification of emotion, purification and perception through a artworks.
