Tissue irritation potential of several pulpotomy medicaments(2, 5, 10% glutaraldehyde and 1 :5 diluted formocresol) during various time intervals(1, 7, 14, 28 days) in sixteen Sprague-Dawley rats were evaluated histologically under light microscope.
No significant differences in the degree of irritation could be found between 2, 5, and 10% glutaraldehyde groups, expect 1 day-10% glutaraldehyde group which showed higher inflammatory response than other 1 day-glutaraldehyde groups.
Specimens of 1 : 5 diluted formocresol groups were shown to be highly irritating to connective tissues in general and the inflammatory responses persisted through out the whole test periods.
From the results of the present study, the clinical application of 2% glutaraldehyde being recommended as an adequate concentration might be reconsidered and the possible use of higher concentration could be thought.
