세벌식 활자꼴이 유아읽기습득에 미치는 영향 = Effects of Se-beol font on children`s reading acquisition

국문 초록 (Abstract)

탈네모틀의 한 종류인 세벌체는 여러 한글학자들에 의해 한글창제원리를 반영하는 실용적 서체로 알려졌다. 하지만 이러한 장점에도 불구하고 가독성에 관한 논란과 서체자체의 완성도 미흡으로 인해 광범위하게 사용되지 못하였으며, 제목용 서체로서 인식되어왔다. 세벌체는 한글 서체발전의 가능성을 지닌 서체로서 보다 활발하게 사용되어야 하며, 그러기 위해서는 세벌체의 특성을 고려한 현실적이며 구체적인 적용방법이 제시되어야 한다. 유아 한글 습득에 있어서 세벌체 사용은 여러 한글학자들에 의해 권장되어져 왔다. 이는 한글의 원리 이해를 통한 한글 습득이 가능하다는 장점이 있기 때문이다. 본 연구는 유아를 대상으로 한 세벌체 사용의 적합성에 대해서 논하고 있으며, 한글 초기 습득단계에 있는 만4세 유아를 상대로 세벌체와 네모체의 단어읽기를 진행하였다. 조사 결과로 유아의 세벌체와 네모체의 단어인지율의 차이는 유의미하지 않다는 것이 밝혀졌으며, 단어인지 차이의 세부 분석 결과 세벌체는 네모체에 비해 우측 모음을 포함한 단어에서 낮은 단어 인지율을, 하단 모음을 포함한 단어에서 높은 단어 인지율을 보였다. 또한 단어인식시간은 세벌체가 네모체에 비해 낮았으며, 능동성에서 세벌체가 네모체에 비해 높았다. 이는 세벌체의 가독성 논란은 유아 단어 인지에 영향을 미치지 않으며, 능동성이나 속도에 있어서 세벌체에서 우월하게 반응하였다는 사실을 보여준다. 이 같은 조사 결과는 유아 한글 습득에 세벌체가 긍정적 영향을 미치며, 따라서 세벌체 사용이 적절하다는 것을 증명한다. 유아를 대상으로 한 세벌체의 연구는 다방면에서 계속되어져야한다. 이러한 연구를 토대로 보다 분별력 있는 유아 서체 선정이 이루어져야 하며, 동시에 세벌체의 완성도를 높이는 데에도 기여할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Se-beol font is known to Korean language scholars as a practical font which carries a basic concept of Korean modular writing system. In spite of its advantages, it has not been used broadly. Its legibility issue and poor degree of completion has prevented variety of uses of Se-beol font. However, Se-beol font`s structure illustrates a possibility to achieve further development in Korean typefaces. Therefore, there needs to be realistically thought-out proposals to use Se-beol font by considering its unique structure in order to benefit Korean typography. Se-beol font`s structure reveals a characteristic of Korean writing system, a combination of vowels and consonants, and it is easier to recognizer different characters within a word. Because of its structural merit, Se-beol font helps children to learn Hangul more easily as they can understand its modular system. This research is focused on applying Se-beol font to children`s Hangul education. Children are more likely to accept visually unfamiliar typefaces like Se-beol font than adults who have been exposed to a commonly used typeface, such as Ne-mo font, for longer period of time. Examination on word recognition in both Se-beol font and Ne-mo font has been performed, and the subject was 4 years old children, who had just started learning Hangul. The result shows possibilities of expanding Se-beol font`s use to children`s reading Hangul, and also provides directions to improve Se-beol font.
