To delineate the tributary area of urban center and develop its related theory is not only an important task in the urban geography but indispensable to the establishment of the regionel planning.
The division of region in Korea is not limited to the traditional, political division; The geographers of modern days have divided Korea into geographical regions in a number of different ways; An economic regions has recently been delineated by economists.
The primary attempt of this study is to delineate the tributary areas of Cities (Shis) in Korea according to what degree a certain areas are connected with certain cities. How many telegrams were exchanged among regions were the criteria selected, for the telegram indicates the synthesized expression of various functions of cites. This criteria can be uniformly applied to every hierachy of city and enables exact statistical informations available. The procedure to delineate the tributary area was: (1) the ratio of each Shi and Gun's dependence on the Cities was calculated, (2) Shi's or Gun's dependence was then decided upon by noting on which city it had the highest ratio of dependence.
As the result, the scope of the tributary area of each city in Korea was established as shown Figure 1. The boundaries of both tributary areas and political provinces (Dos) generally coincide with each other. For noncoincident areas the causes were examined. The tributary areas which such metropolises as Seoul and Pusan have were more extensive and strongly influenced by them than expected, thus proving the dominance of great cities. The overlapping areas in which more than two cities compete amount to 78 Guns, based on more than 5% of dependence ratio (See Figure 5 & 6. Because of the limited space, the analysis of the tributary areas delineated in this paper is expected to be carried in the following volume.
