신석기시대 망치형석기의 기능 연구 = A Functional Study on the Hammerstone Tools in the Neolithic

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 서해중부지역에 위치한 인천 운서동·중산동유적, 시흥 능곡동유적 등의 신석기시대 유적에서 으스러짐에 의해 능이 발생한 특징적인 석기가 보고되고 있지만 그에 합당한 용어나 기능에 대한 연구는 아직 미비한 수준이다. 이러한 문제인식을 바탕으로 이 석기의 기능에 초점을 맞추어 ‘망치형석기’로 명명하고 형태기술과 사용흔분석을 통해 그 기능을 밝혀내고자 하였다.
망치형석기는 주로 신석기시대 주거지 내에서 갈돌, 갈판 등의 생활도구와 공반하고 망치 기능을 가지므로 일상생활에서 지속적으로 사용된 것으로 판단하였다. 석기의 제 작은 주로 석영맥암을 그대로 이용하여 사용하는 과정에서 형태가 잡혀갔으며 모양잡기(shaping)한 예는 드물었다. 또 손에 쥐기 적합한 크기와 무게를 지녔으며 능의 발달이나 마모정도에 의해 분류가 가능하지만 사용정도에 따른 차이로 판단되었다. 망치형석기의 기능에 대해서는 식량재료의 가공 또는 석기 제작에 사용되는 도구라는 가설이 주를 이루며, 이를 확인하기 위해 실험과 현미경 분석을 시도하였다. 망치형 석기는 도구의 뾰족한 부분과 능을 따라 사용에 의한 흔적과 도구의 변형이 집중되어 나타나며, 주로 깨짐과 으스러짐으로 형성되어 있었다. 실험에서 이 석기는 광물재료에 사용되었을 경우 실제 유물과 유사한 형태와 흔적을 보이며, 특히 석기의 모서리부 분을 도구 제작시 쪼는 방법으로 사용했을 때 실제 유물과 가장 유사한 흔적과 도구의 변형이 나타났다. 민족지학 자료와 실험 및 분석 결과 그리고 유적에서 공반 출토되는 유물 구성들을 토대로 운서동 망치형석기는 도구 가운데 갈돌, 갈판의 사용면을 다듬는 마무리 단계와 사용 중 많이 닳게 된 사용면을 재생하는 과정에서 사용하기 적합한 것으로 보이며, 주로 쪼는 작업방법으로 이용되었을 가능성이 높은 것으로 생각된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The hammerstones that had particular characteristics of the crest formation caused by repetitive crushing were recently excavated in Neolithic sites which were located in the West Central regions. However, studies on the definitions of terminology or the functions of these stone tools are still insufficient. They were defined mainly as elements of grinding stone. For this reason, these tools were considered to have been used continuously in everyday life. The quartz veins primarily have been used in the production of the tools. Then, the shape of the tools was perfected while in use, rather than pre-made. They had the size and weight suitable for one-hand use. They were classified by the degrees of crest development. However, it is likely that these differences appear depending on the duration of use. There are two main hypotheses concerning the function of the hammerstone:the tool for the processing of food materials or the tool for the production of other stone tools. We have tried several experiments and microscopic analysis to confirm these hypotheses in this article. Usewear was formed intensively on the edges and the narrow part of the tools. Deformation of the tool surface due to the crushing and small chipping was identified. We also observed traces similar to those of archaeological tools that were used on the mineral materials with methods pecking. We assumed that the function of the hammerstone was to use in the manufacturing process or to retouch the grind stone using a method pecking on the ethnographic data, experimental data, and result of microscopic analysis.
