This article expands on previous research on the psychological foundations of civic engagement by evaluating the role of the “Big Five” personality traits with regard to associational membership and volunteering activities. The results of a nationally representative sample of the South Korean population demonstrate a variety of effects of personality on participatory patterns. Individuals high in Agreeableness or Emotional Stability are likely to be active in at least one voluntary civic organization. Meanwhile, individuals high in Openness are likely to be involved in a larger number of organizations and to be more active in volunteering. Extraversion also turns out to be positively associated with the number of voluntary associations with which people are affiliated.
These findings are in line with those from previous studies conducted in Western cultures, and therefore contribute to enhancing the external validity of the relationship between personality and civic engagement.
