염상섭 소설과 식민지 현실의 재현 = 식민지 신문과 정치의 관계를 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

3·1운동의 폭발적 충격으로 식민지배 권력이 문화정치로 전환되고 민간신문이 발간되었지만, 정치적 자유가 금지된 식민지 상황에서 신문의 허용은 곧 신문의 검열이기도 했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이러한 상황이 식민지 조선의 신문에서 정치성이 거세되었다는 의미로 환원되는 것만은 아니다. 의회민주주의가 부재한 식민지에서 신문이 정치적 사건에 대해 자유롭게 토론하는 공간으로서의 역할을 수행하는 것은 불가능하지만, 대중의 주의를 집중시킬 정치적 사건을 전시하고 보여주는 공간으로서의 역할을 수행하는 것까지 전적으로 금지되지는 않았기 때문이다. 이러한 양상은 식민 치하에서 발표된 염상섭 소설에서도 유사하게 나타나 정치적 사건에 대한 재현에서 민감한 내용은 생략되거나 복자 처리되는 한편, 그 사건이 가진 스펙터클로서의 측면은 강화되어 제시된다. 복자로 뒤덮여 있다고 할지라도 화려하고 볼 만한 스펙터클이 동반된다면 그 강도에 비례해 사건의 정치적 의미 또한 크고 깊어진다. 한편, 정치적 자유가 허용되지 않아 정치면을 갖지 못한 식민지 신문이 사회면에서 잡다한 사건들과 함께 부수적으로 정치적 사건을 보도할 수밖에 없었던 것처럼, 염상섭 소설에서도 정치적인 사건과 사소하고 일상적인 사건이 혼재되어 있다. 식민지 일상에서는 위반의 정도가 미약한 행동들이 사상 관련 법규에 의해 처벌되고 그에 비례해 은밀한 저항이 곳곳에서 이루어짐으로써 식민지적 삶의 저류에 근본적인 적대와 불안정성이 상존하고 있음을 지시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Though the mode of colonial rule was transformed into a cultural one, newspapers were still censored. Nonetheless, this situation does not mean that the politics has been banned in colony. In the absence of parliamentary democracy, it is entirely prohibited to conduct a role as a public sphere for political discourses, but it is not entirely prohibited from showing the political events as spectacles. In the Yeom"s works, sensitive details on political events are omitted or masked and the events are reinforced as a spectacle. The political significance of the event is also enormous and serious, even if it is accompanied by a spectacular view of the spectacle. Newspapers were forced to report political events along with miscellaneous paragraphs because political freedom was not allowed. Similarly, political events and trivial events are mixed in the Yeom"s works. In colonial situations, normal and ordinary acts are punished by laws related to political crime and there is a secret resistance everywhere. As a result, it reveals that there is a fundamental antagonism and instability in the bottom of colonial life.
