This study focused on hygiene education and educational reform on Ju Yo–Seop(朱耀燮)’s educational activities through the media in Japanese colonial era. In hygiene education, he translated the The hygiene of the school child(1914) by Lewis M. Terman and published it in the media. In 1925, he published a series of 38 times in the Dong–A Ilbo titled “The hygiene of the school child(小學生徒의 衛生敎育)” (8.25~11.15). He introduced the latest information on school hygiene at the time, including the physical basis of education, the general laws of growth, some physiological differences between children and adults, tuberculosis and the school, and the physiology of ventilation. In relation to educational reform, Ju Yo–Seop serialized 24 times in the Dong–A Ilbo(9.3~10.3) and 33 times in the Joseon Tongsin(朝鮮通信)(9.15~10.25) under the title of ‘Defects in Joseon Education’. Here, he suggested his opinions on the issues of Joseon education, the direction in which Joseon education should proceed, and specific practice methods based on specific data. The significance of educational history can be found in that he tried to promote the importance of education through the media in Japanese colonial era. However, it seems to be open to criticism that most of his proposed education–related content was translated and introduced by translating books published in the United States or suggested educational reform by referring to American education. In conclusion, known as a novelist, he is an educator who has worked for better education in Korea, including the emphasis on hygiene education, opposition to cramming education, introduction of progressive education, and opposition to memorization tests.
