      Intercollegiate athletics, especially football, have had remarkable success marketing themselves to the American people. Football has done so because it were forced to commercialize itself in order to maintain a high level of performance rather than slip into mediocrity. College football became commercialized well television contributed to the process. Because of the vested economic interests entrenched in the various bowl games. The Division I Bowl Subdivision long avoided instituting a playoff tournament to determine an annual national champion. The current system is the Bowl Championship Series, a selection system that creates five bowl match-ups involving ten of the top ranked teams, including an opportunity for the top two to compete in the BCS National Championship Game. The pursuit of television money has provided financial independence to many big-time university athletic programs, since they can independently auction their product” to the highest bidder.
