다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

‘The Chicago Imagists’ is a group of representational artists associated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 1960's. The study, which began with the academic interest of the researcher from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, aims to explain and study the "Chicago Imagists," which has not been actively introduced in Korea. The research method of the Chicago Imagists is based on its origin, advancement and derivative works. First, analyzing School of the Art Institute of Chicago which has offered theory and practical education through its unique artistic perspective with interest in art, giving rise to advent of ‘The Chicago Imagists.’ And it describes the characteristic and importance of ‘Hairy Who’ at Hyde Park Art Center in 1966 which has become a representative, monumental exhibition and then, a series of exhibitions. The purpose of this study is to introduce art pieces of representative imagists such as Karl Wirsum and Jim Nutt, and it will help to define the heartbeat of the Chicago Imagists.
This research is also analyzed the Women imagist’s feminism and other artists in terms of content and expression carefully. Futhermore, the researcher studied on the second-generation ‘The Chicago Imagists’ who were influenced and artists who represent the current Chicago art in order to understand and identify value of imagist in the Chicago’s modern art. In contrast with Pop Art of the same age, ‘The Chicago Imagists’ has contributed toward growth of nonmainstream art by using the linear expression technique, symbolic shapes, and intense color palettes. In addition, it has been inherited by future-generation artists based on ‘The Chicago Imagists’ works in Chicago. Consequently, it’s expected to see that this study could lay a corner stone to be used for future studies by stimulating interest and contributing to better understanding in this subject, since it interprets symbolic images of ‘The Chicago Imagists’ academically and introduces in chronological order with art history facts.

‘시카고 이미지스트’는 1960년대 후반 시카고예술대학교 출신의 구상주의 작가들을 토대로 한 그룹명이다. 시카고예술대학교 출신인 본 연구자의 학문적 관심에서 시작된 본 연구는 국내에서 활발한 소개가 이루어지지 않은 ‘시카고 이미지스트’에 대한 설명과 학술적 연구를 목적으로 한다. 연구방법은 시카고 이미지스트의 출현, 발전 그리고 파생을 순서대로 다루는 것을 기초로 하며, 우선 시카고 이미지스트를 탄생시킨 시카고예술대학교의 비서구권 미술에 대한 관심과 독특한 예술적 관점을 통한 이론과 실기 교육에 대해 분석한다. 그리고 ‘시카고 이미지스트’의 1966년 하이드 파크 아트센터에서 개최된 기념비적인 전시 ‘헤어리 후’와 일련의 시리즈 전시의 중요성과 특성을 서술한다. 1세대 이미지스트의 대표적 작가인 칼 워섬, 짐 너트에 대해 소개하여 시카고 이미지스트의 핵심적인 특징을 정의하고, 여성 이미지스트 맴버의 페미니즘, 그리고 그 외의 그룹 내 작가들의 작품을 내용적, 표현적 측면으로 면밀히 분석한다. 또한, 이들이 영향을 끼친 2세대 ‘시카고 이미지스트’와 현재 시카고 미술을 대표하는 작가에 대해 연구하여 시카고 현대 미술에서의 이미지스트가 갖는 가치에 대해 파악하였다. 결론적으로, ‘시카고 이미지스트’를 상징적 이미지를 학문적으로 해석하고, 그들을 연대순으로 나열하여미술사적 사실을 근거로 소개하는 본 논문을 통해 선적인 표현기법, 상징적 형상, 그리고 자극적인 색감을 주로 사용한 시카고 이미지스트는 동시대에 발생한 팝아트와는 대조적인 양상을 띠며 비주류 미술의 성장에 큰 기여를 하였다는 사실을 도출할 수 있었다. 또한 그들의 작품을 근간으로 하는 후세대작가들을 통해 현재에도 시카고 내외에서 그 계보는 여실히 이어지고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 본 논문을통해 이들에 대한 관심과 이해를 높여 본 논문이 추후의 연구에 초석의 일부로서 응용되어 많은 학술적 연구가 이루어지길 기대한다.
