Amoghavajra-acarya(不空)was bom in the family of Brahmana in North India. He was a acarya(阿闍梨)in Esoteric sect of Buddhism who succeeded two acaryas―SubhakarasMia(善無畏)and Vajrabo (顧金剛智)-propagated Esoteric Buddhism to China. There was a person who cherished Esoteric Buddhism and opened golden age of Esoteric Buddhism in China. He was the very Guru Amogavajra- acarya. If Esoteric Buddhism of the two monks was Indian one, Eso teric Buddhism of Amogavajra-acarya was Chinese one. Thus there was clear difference.
It can be identified enough through his translation list. His role is known from his main translations. His translation list shows that Esoteric Buddhism is in harmony with many thoughts of Mahayana Buddhism, its national defence idea, Chinese traditional thoughts etc. This can be seen in Esoteric Buddhism of Amogavajra-acarya and his disciples. And this also shows their endless efforts for Indian Esoteric Buddhism spreaded by Subhakarasimha and Vajrabodhi to become
rooted in China. From era of Amogavajra-acarya, Esoteric Buddhism was not same as one when it was propagated from India. Chinese thoughts were added to India Esoteric Buddhism so that Chinese color appeared. Amogavajra-acarya cherished tradition of India and Western China, and was faithful to teachings of his masters. And he visited India two times during his lifetime to bring Sutras of Esoteric Bud dhism. Thus he was international. He did not stick to Esoteric Bud dhism. He accepted national defence thoughts, Mahayana Buddhism, even Chinese traditional religion. His Esoteric Buddhism was free from everything and in harmony with them.
