John Steinbeck, a Novel-Literature-Prize laureate, published three play-novelettes?Of Mice and Men (1937), The Moon Is Down (1942), and Burning Bright (1950). The play-novelette is a play that is easy to read or a short novel that can be performed directly by lifting out the dialogue from a playscript. In this way, Steinbeck intended to give an immediately powerful communication of a theme to both readers and audiences. As a result, Of Mice and Men won the New York Drama Critics Award for the best play of the season in 1937, and The Moon Is Down came in the second of the same award in 1942. However, the third work Burning Bright gave Steinbeck a disastrous failure. This paper aims to illuminate the causes of the failure of Burning Bright with the help of the earlier research and the analysis of its text. Based on the results, I observe the whole stories of The Moon Is Down, which has not been covered by the other critics. As a consequence, in Burning Bright, the arbitrary abstractness in the form and language leads to over-extension, abridgement, and minute description. Also, the utilitarianism of American pragmatism in its thematic part seems to be applied too much to the human right. On the other hand, The Moon Is Down is distinctive of more abundant contents, fast moving stories, clear characterization, dramatic tension, competitive composition, change of characters’ thought and emotion. Besides, the abstained and clear expression gives an efficient treatment for the superiority of democracy (the spirit of the times), and the plain humanity that the author loves. All in all, the most important reason for the failure of Burning Bright is that Steinbeck himself violated the regulations he had set up in its foreword from the previous experience of The Moon Is Down.
