도서(島嶼)의 지명 유래 고 = A study on the origins of island names of west sea in Chung-Nam Province

국문 초록 (Abstract)

요약
본고는 충남 서해 도서 지방의 지명 유래를 통해서 민속학적 접근 가능성을 고찰하기 위한
시도 작업이다. 도서 지역을 선정한 이유는 아직도 신앙적 요소가 많이 남아 있을 것이고,
지명에 전통적인 요소와 고유어가 많이 남아 있기 때문이다. 도서지방의 지명 유래를
검토하여 보았을 때 다음과 같다.

첫째, 마을의 이름은 독립적인 의식을 가지지 못한 작은 단위의 마을을 이름하기 때문에
지형의 위치에 따른 이름이 단연 많다. 둘째, 산의 이름은 사람과 접근하기 쉽지 않은
공간이기 때문에 신앙과 관련된 역할에 따라 생긴 지명들이 많다. 셋째, 바닷가나 바다의
지명은 이들의 일상생활 터전이기 때문에 자신들의 눈에 보인 형상에 따라 명명한 지명이
많은 것같다. 앞으로 다른 지방의 도서들을 검토할 때 이 결론의 의의를 가질 것이다.
ABSTRACT
This study is for folkore-related approaching possibility through surveying the origins of
island names of west sea in Chung-Nam Province. The reason why I chose the island
areas is that there must be a plenty of regional faiths and traditional reatures and
specific words in island names of those areas.

The followings are the generalizations of the surveys of the origins of island names.

First, there are a lot of island names which originated form the locations, because the
names of the towns were named after the small unit of village with no consciously
independent identity. Secondly, the name of mountain were named after special role of
the regional faith because it could not be easily approached. The third, many of general
names of these areas were generated from the shapes of places where they could see
regularly because those names of beaches and sea were the places where they had lived
for a long time.

These generalizations will have great significances when it comes to checking all the
details in this study.
