This study aims to investigate the problematic characteristics, significance, and the hitherto effects of Choe JaeSeo`s Enlarged Realism and In-depth Realism (November 1936). It focuses on the relationships between his aforementioned text and his previous writings, the novella and short story that he criticized, and the literary field of the time. The results of the analysis confirmed the following three facts: (1) By using the term realism in a strange way, he disturbed leftists` discourse on realism. (2) He emphasized novelists` objective attitude through the review of their works and did not hesitate to distort the true features of Stream Scenery (川邊風景) and Wings (날개). (3) By doing so, he accorded literary importance to those works and attempted to reorganize the order of the literary field. The significance of Choe`s criticism is threefold. First, he produced changes in literary discourses on realism. Second, he attempted to establish a new order in the literary field that was entering a state of confusion. Lastly, his criticism became the source of research on realism and modernism. In short, Choe`s criticism can be regarded as an ideological practice. The significance of this study lies in the fact that it certifies the aforementioned characteristics by examining the three relationships mentioned above.
