Our epoch has witnessed many transformations, transformations which have ruptured contemporary culture from the hard shell of modernism. Postmodernism is an attempt to respond to such transformations. The term best description of the underlying foundation of such postmodernism is indeterminacy. The tendency of indeterminacy includes all types of uncertainty, irresolution, incompleteness, which pervade our mode of actions, ideas, thinking and interpretations, constituting the contemporary artistic, social, literary and cultural atmosphere. During the early and middle twentieth century, the indeterminate nature of our reality became increasingly evident in diverse areas such as the new science, philosophy, art, language, information, literature and literary theory, and has become a decisive element in the new order of our knowledge.
The cultural indeterminacy prevalent in this postmodern era has been well captured by the contemporary fiction writers, especially the anti-realistic writers who are classified as postmodern. The indeterminate nature of literary text and its interpretation has also characterized contemporary literary theory-to name but a few, the New Criticism, Reader-Response theory. Reception theory, Hermeneutics. Speech Act theory, Deconstructionist theory. The most controversial idea in recent literary theory is that literary texts possess a radical indeterminacy that makes impossible the possibility of a right or wrong interpretation of any work.
