Authors have measured fasting serum gastrin and secretin levels on 54 patients with gastroduodenal ulcer diagnosed by the gastrofiberscopy visiting to the division of Gastroenterology. department of Internal Medicine, Korea University Hospital and observed the patterns of their blood levels according to acute and healing stages. 1) Fasting serum gastrin in acute gastric ulcer was increased above normal control level with their M±S.D. of 68.0±58.2 pg per ml. This increase had statistical significance(p<0.05) between control group and gastric ulcer patients. Fasting serum secretin in acute gastric ulcer was also increased above normal control level with their M±S.D. of 106.5±47.1 pg per ml without statistical significance between control group and gastric ulcer patients. 2) Fasting serum gastrin and secretin in acute duodenal ulcer were increased above normal control level with their M±S.D, of 52.5±33.1 pg per ml and 112.83±39.0 pg per ml. These increases had statistical significance(p<0.05) between control group and duodenal ulcer patients. 3) Fasting serum gastrin and secretin in peptic ulcer according to its acute and healing stages were as follows: Elevated blood level of gastrin in acute stage of gastric ulcer(M±S.D.. 60.6±76.4 pg per ml) was decreased to 48.9±38.1 PF P ml in healing stage with statistically significant correlation between acute and healing stages. Serum secretin was increased(M±S.D., 105±77.0 pg per ml) in acute stage and decreased (M±S.D., 92.0±54.3 pg per ml) in healing stage without statistically significant correlation between the both stages. Fasting serum gastrin in acute stage of duodenal ulcer was increased(M±S,D., 43.7±34.1 pg per ml) and in healing stage it was decreased(M±S.D., 40.9±32.8 pg per ml) without statistically significant correlation between the both stages. Serum secretin was incrased in acute stage with M±S.D. of 125.3±47.0 pg per ml and decreased in healing stage with M±S.D. of 120.9±55.3 pg per ml. The correlation between acute and healing stages was statistically significant(pg0. 005). We concluded that gastrin, antral factor might play a role in the development of peptic ulcer.
