공공도서관의 복합화 경향에 관한 연구 = A Study on the Complex Trend of Domestic Public Libraries

The roles and functions of libraries have been gradually expanding in modern times. Especially since the beginning of the 20th century, public libraries have contained various cultural contents as forms of complex cultural spaces, and in order to satisfy requirements not only for the basic functions of libraries such as reading and lending but for cultural functions as community facilities, diverse rooms that support cultural and leisure activities have been added. The complex of public libraries don`t only contain cultural functions, and the range of the complex is defined as a broader concept binding things that have similar use, target, and characteristic together, being combined with public cultural welfare facilities and commercial purpose facilities. Targeting 759 public libraries designated by Library Information Policy Planning Organization in 31 December, 2010, this study surveyed whether the complexes exist, where public libraries are located among 168 local governments and metropolitan councils, and how many public libraries do they have, by classifying it to three places that already have proceeded with the complex, have plans, and have no such schemes. Therefore, this study tries to classify the types of facility complexes through surveying cases that were made complexes in the same position with libraries by combining more than one functions other than the space organization element specified in ``establishment and maintenance manual of public libraries`` Moreover, its purpose is to learn the future public library complex prospects through understanding the merits and demerits that these aspects of complexes bring about, and the necessity. The results of this survey on the complex trend shall be the basic materials for the future studies.
