Strychnine and cardiazol are both stimulants of central nervous system, mainly spinal cord and medulla oblongata respectively.
They have a little effect on the circulatory system and have not definitive effect on the isolated mammalian heart and isolated blood vessels.
In convulsive doses, they have a hypertensive effect mainly due to contraction of skeletal muscles, with increased venous return.
In this experiment, I attempted to investigate the influence of epinephrine on the blood pressure of rabbit pretreated with strychnine and cardiazol.
The results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. The hypertensive effect of epinephrine on the blood pressure of rabbit was inhibited by the pretreatment with strychnine and cardiazol and its inhibitory effect became more prominent as repeating the experiment.
2. The contractile effect of epinephrine on the isolated rabbit heart and ear vessels was not interfered by the pretreatment with strychnine and cardiazol.
