The purpose of this experimental study is to examine effects of vocabulary teaching using lexical approach on learner’s communicative competence and affective factors. To verify the effectiveness of the experimental treatment, three achievement tests(pre, post, 8-weeks post) for the cognitive domain and two questionnaires (pre, post) for the affective domain were administered. Following results were obtained regarding with the cognitive domain: First, there were significant improvements in receptive and productive language ability. Second, the lexical approach has greater influence on the students previously in lower-proficiency level compared to higher-proficiency level. Third, there was a positive long term effect on vocabulary retention. Following results were obtained regarding with the affective domain: First, there was a positive influence on the students’ interest and self-confidence. Second, the lower-proficiency level students had more positive effects.
