The purpose of this study is to reveal the importance of Maurice Courant and the Korean Bibliography(Bibliographie Core´enne) in the field of koreanology, well-known but not so much studied.
This study consists of five chapters. Chapter Ⅰ is a brief discussion of this subject as an introduction. Chapter Ⅱ contains the life story of M. Courant and his 21 works about korean studies among his whole 103 works. Chapter Ⅲ is a discussion of the Korean Bibliography itself, decided into Introduction, Teaching, Studies and Languages, Confucianism, Litterature, Morals and Customs, History and Geography, Sciences and Arts, Religions and Foreign relations. Chapter Ⅳ is about the Catalog of chinese, korean, japanese books(Catalogue des livres chinois, core´ens, japonais, etc.). And chapter Ⅴ is the summing up of this dissertation as a conclusion. Among these chapters, Courant's 21 works about korean studies of chapter Ⅱ and the whole chapter Ⅲ are specially emphasized.
Several general conclusions halve been reached by the present study. The most important ones are:
First, some of Courant's korean studies, for example, like "The relation between Korea and Japan until 9th century and korean influence on japanese settlement in Korea, Pusan from with century" or "Chinese stele in the realm of Ko kou rye" are regarded as contributive dissertations in each field up to now, or give us a point of dispute at the present time.
Second, Korean Bibliography could be characterized by the national bibliography until the end of 19th century, which includes the books in Korea, in France, in England, etc., but defective. Therefore, it must be completed, at least, in the part of the collection abroad.
Third the bibliographic descriptions or the bibliographical notes of each classic being inconsistent or incorrect, ti must be also unified and rectified in the order of systematic description.
Fourth, the Catalog of chinese, korean, japanese books, incomplete and discontinued in 1912 doesn't include the korean books on the catalog itself, but cannot eliminate the possibility through an actual survey.
Because of deficiency o the precedent researchs, the subject and the sphere of this study is so general and comprehensive that more fractionated and more profound researchs must be followed henceforth
