It is well known that the cavity detuning length is one of the most important parameters in free-electron laser oscillators, especially for operating with short electron pulses. Using one dimensional Maxwell-Lorentz coupled particle simulation, we demonstrate the control of short-pulse FEL oscillator characteristics by changing dynamically the effective cavity detuning length. The results are in good agreement with previous experiment by FELIX group, and suggest the way to control and improve FEL dynamic characteristics more effectively.
