The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of a breast-feeding educational program by postpartum home health care on the promotion of mothers' breast-feeding compliance.
The study design is a non-equivalent control group post-test only.
Data were collected from June 1, 1999 to January 12, 2000, primarily via telephone interview on the fourth and the twelfth postpartum week respectively to investigate the rate of mothers' breast-feeding compliance after childbirth.
One hundred and twenty six mothers who delivered in one general hospital in Seoul participated in this study, 61 mothers of whom were assigned to experimental group and 65, to control group.
The educational program by postpartum home health care was applied only to the experimental group twice per 10days postpartum.
The collected data were analyzed by means of Chi- square test.
The results are as follows :
1. The rate of mothers' breast-feeding compliance for one month after childbirth showed 50.8% in the experimental group, 32.3% in the control group, however there was no significant difference statistically(x2=6.964, P=0.072).
2. The rate of mothers' breast-feeding compliance for 3months after childbirth in the experimental group demonstrated a significant difference ; much higher rate of mothers' feeding compliance than control group(x2=7.848, P=0.049).
Conclusively, the breast-feeding educational program by postpartum home health care to which was applied in this study is effective in the promotion of breast-feeding and shows the increasing rate of mothers' feeding compliance and duration.
