In order to plan the care and management for the chronic mentally ill, this preliminary study was conducted to 107 inpatients from 3 facilities for the homeless at 3cities in Chollapuk-do.
The following results were obtained :
1. The 107 patients (45.1%) were admitted from 237 homeless, and the 85 mental patients (80.2%) were identified from one facility for the homeless.
2. Female patients were admitted 2 times more than male, and the most age groups were between 20th and 40th.
3. The most frequent diagnosis of patients was the schizophrenic disorder, and then the mental retardation and the organic brain syndrome in order.
4. During therapeutic intervention, two patients died and four epilepsies were discharged after 14days of admission. After 3 months of the therapeutic evaluation and treatment, six patients were transferred to the facility for the chronic mentally ill due to the continued observation and custody for chronicity, and 47 patients to the rehabilitative facility.
5. A model of Korean mental health care system was finally suggested by this preliminary study and experience in the Neuropsychiatric Institute, School of Medicine, Won Kwang University.
