I have analyzed the iconography of death expressde in the paintings of the medieval and baroque periods. The conceptual notions of death in these works can be found to be closely associated with christianity. The iconography of death expressed in these paintings is as follows;
Firstly, in the early medieval period everyone hoped for a natural death. The iconography of the paintings expressed this notion. Secondly, during the middle medieval age, there was the notion that people had to wait in a 'Transi' stage until the promise of everlasting life, after Judgement Day is fullfilled. This concept was expressed in the metaphorical image of the human dancing with death. The dance of death, ending, when eternity is gained as everlasting life and human mortality is destroyed. Thirdly, after the renaissance, the baroque period concealed death again by expressing natural death in the form of iconography.
