Bolinger (1977) has implied that a distinction can be made between "dramatic" and "undramatic" particles. This paper is an empirical study to verify such a distinction. For this purpose, a set of data is collected from TV commentaries on and magazine descriptions of baseball games under the assumption that expressions appropriate for such circumstances are full of "dramatic" particles. An analysis of the data reveals that particles out, up, down, off, away, in and on appear frequently in the data whereas particles such as about, along, aside, forth, and over seldom or never appear. It follows from this that the former set of particles may be legitimately called "dramatic" particles.
