나나 아스마우 Nana Asma’u 의 이슬람 페미니즘 = Islam Feminism of Nana Asma’u

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이슬람권의 페미니즘은 단순히 종교적 차원에서의 논의가 아니며, 다문화주의와 다원주의와 관련하여 논쟁의 중심에 있어왔다. 이슬람과 페미니즘의 문제는 제3세계의 지점에서 근대성과 자본주의, 제국주의에서부터 종교, 문화, 전통 등 여
러 복잡한 문제들과 얽혀져 있기 때문이다. 그 중에서도 특히 이슬람권에서 이슬람적인 것과 서구/근대적인 것과의 대립은 ‘여성’의 문제에 집중되어 왔다. 따라서 이슬람 여성들은 페미니즘이 내포하고 있는 서구적 특성 때문에 그것을 기피
하는 경우가 있는 듯 보이지만, 한편에서는 이슬람 여성들 역시 그들의 권익 신장과 평등을 위해 노력해왔다.
본 논문에서는 나이지리아의 무슬림 여성 시인이자 지식인, 사회활동가로서 19세기 초, 중반에 활발히 활동한 나나 아스마우 Nana Asma’u 를 통해 하우사 사회의 페미니즘 운동을 살펴본다. 19세기 초 강력한 무슬림 하우사 왕조에서 일생
을 산 그녀는 무슬림 여성의 삶과 철학, 실제적 삶의 투쟁 등을 다룸에 있어 철저하게 초기 이슬람으로의 회귀 및 그것에 순응하는 전략을 택한다. 아스마우는 무슬림 여성으로서 무슬림 하우사 페미니즘을 그들의 문화 내에서 모색함으로써 그
들이 나아가야 할 방향을 제시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Feminism within Islam transcends beyond its simple religious underpinnings and has been at the heart of debates associated with multi-culturalism and pluralism. This is because feminism within Islam is linked to a complex
interplay between modernity, capitalism, and imperialism that affects various issues associated with religion, culture, and tradition. Within this interplay, the issue of women in Islam has typically been focused on the clash
between things considered Islam and things considered Western. Therefore, many efforts have also been made by Islamic women to improve conditions concerning women s rights and equality.
This study examines the feminist movement within the ethnic group known as the Hausa through the work of Nana Asma u, a Nigerian Islamic woman in the early and mid-nineteenth century. Living under the commanding
influences of the Muslim Hausa Kingdom, Asma u chooses the strategy of scrupulously adhering to early Islam to support her efforts to advance the life of Muslim women and their everyday struggles. As a Muslim woman, Asma u
explores possible avenues of advancing Muslim Hausa Feminism within her own cultural boundaries.
