This study investigated Foreigner Talk (FT) features in order to examine how native speakers (NS) adjust language and negotiate conversation to have a successful communication with nonnative speakers (NNS). For this study, two sets of a 60 minute NS-NNS casual conversation data were collected via tape recording at an English conversation group meeting held at the first Christian Church in Portland.. For analysis of the collected data, this study used discourse analysis and followed Ferguson and Hatch on FT discourse. The results of the analysis showed the existence of FT features in NS-NNS discourse such as lexical substitution, fillers, syntactic simplification, pronunciation correction, repetition, clarification requests, confirmation checks, repair, etc. FT in discourse would have NS adjust language and employ conversational strategies to interact with NNS. To conclude, regarding the research question, the results of the study showed FT had teaching values. And it was also effective when negotiating and adapting the language. The findings of this study would be beneficial for English speaking instruction.
