Aging and the Change in Self-Perceptions : Multilevel Modeling on Its Relationships with the Changes in Physical, Psychological, and Social Domains = 노화와 자아개념의 궤적: 관련된 건강, 심리, 및 사회적 영역들에 관한 성장모델을 이용한 분석

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 65세 이상 사람들의 자아개념의 궤적을 추정하고, 이 자아개념의 궤적과 관련된 육체적, 심리적, 사회적 변수들을 알아보는 것을 그 목적으로 한다. 분석에 포함된 조사대상은 패널데이터인 Americans Changing Lives (ACL) study에 참석한 65세 이상 1179명(Wave 1)으로 이들 중에서 878명이 Wave 2에 683명이 Wave 3에 각각 참가하였다. 데이터는 MixReg Software를 이용하여 위계성장모형 분석을 하였다. 참가자들은 긍정적 자아감, 육체적 건강 및 인지기능에 있어서 모두 감소하는 궤적들 보여주었다. 또한 육체적 건강, 인지, 사회적 활동의 궤적이 자아감 변화의 궤적과 밀접한 상관관계를 보였고, 이는 육체적, 심리적, 사회적 스트레스가 자아감에 영향을 주는 주요 요소들이라는 것을 보여준다. 자아개념이 육체적, 행동적, 심리적 결과와 밀접한 관계에 있기 때문에, 적절한 수준의 긍정적 자아상의 유지가 성공적 노화의 주요 관건이 될 수 있다. 노년기 자아개념의 궤적이 육체적, 심리적, 사회적 영역의 변화궤적과 밀접한 연관이 있다는 연구결과는 긍정적 자아개념의 유지를 위해서는 일정 수준의 육체적인 건강, 심리적인 건강, 및 사회적인 활동의 유지가 전제되어야 한다는 것을 암시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the trajectory of self-perceptions and how the trajectory is related to the trajectories of functional health, cognitive functions, and social engagement among persons aged 65 and over. Sample consists of 1179 at W1 (1986), 878 at W2 (1989), and 683 at W3 (1994) elders aged 65 and over from the longitudinal data of Americans' Changing Lives (ACL) study. Analyses were done through a multilevel modeling method using the MIXREG software. Participants presented declining trajectories in positive self-perceptions, functional health, cognitive functioning, and social engagement over time. Findings supported the notion that biopsychosocial stresses are negatively associated with self-perceptions. Specifically, elders who experienced faster decreases in functional health, faster increases in cognitive impairment, and faster decreases in social engagement presented faster decreases in positive self-perceptions across the three time points. Maintaining a certain level of positive self-perception is important for older adults in that it is related to behavioral, psychological, and physical consequences. Findings suggest that the change in self-perception depends on the changes in biopsychosocial characteristics such as functional health, cognitive functioning, and social engagement.
