일제강점기 도초도 소작쟁의의 전개 과정과 특징 = The Development and Characteristics of Tenant Farmers’ Strike in Docho Island during the Japanese Colonial Era

This study analyzed the development and characteristics of Tenant Farmers’ Strike in Docho-do which occurred since 1924. The detailed aspects of its development, people initiating the strike, and the characteristics of Tenant Farmers’ Strike were investigated. Tenant Farmers’ Strike in Docho Island is the case that shows how the islanders reacted and fought under the colonial system when their living environment was drastically changing. The results of this research are summed up largely as three parts: first, this author analyzed a series of processes involved in it in detail, for instance, the organization of a tenant farmers’ association, movement to lower the tenancy rate, activity to resist against the forcible attachment of farm rents, the sudden dispatch of armed police, 200 islanders’ strike in Mokpo, or resident representatives’ supportive activity in Gwangju. Second, based on written judgments and newspaper articles, this researcher figured out the real names of 65 major figures engaged in it. Related figures’ concrete roles were examined according to the imprisonment of representatives, selection of executive directors, or injuries in the process of the police’s suppression. Third, the characteristics and nature of Docho Island Tenant Farmers’ Strike were investigated. This author pays attention to its characteristics as anti-Japanese national movement because it was not just about direct resistance against governmental authority or conflict with particular landowners and they confronted landowners as a group, got support from social groups nationwide, and were highly aware of the matter of the colonial system.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 1924년부터 시작된 도초도 소작쟁의의 전개 과정과 특징을 분석한 것이다. 구체적인 전개 양상, 쟁의를 주도한 사람들, 소작쟁의의 특징에 대해 살펴보았다. 도초도 소작쟁의는 생활환경이 급변하던 식민지 체제하에서 섬사람들이 어떻게 대응하고 싸워나갔는지를 보여주는 사례이다. 연구성과는 크게 세 가지이다. 첫째, 소작인회의 결성부터 소작료율 인하 운동, 소작료 강제 차압에 대한 저지 활동, 무장경관대의 기습 출동상황, 섬 주민 200명의 목포 투쟁, 주민대표들의 광주에서의 지원 활동 등 일련의 과정을 세부적으로 분석했다. 둘째, 판결문과 신문기록을 토대로 주요 인물 65명의 실명을 파악했다. 대표자 구속, 집행위원 선발, 경찰 진압과정에서의 부상 등 상황에 따라 관련 인물의 구체적인 역할을 살폈다. 셋째, 도초도 소작쟁의의 특징과 성격을 살폈다. 공권력에 대한 직접 저항 양상, 특정 지주와의 대립이 아니라 지주 단체와 맞선 점, 전국사회단체의 지원, 식민체제에 대한 문제의식이 강했다는 점 등을 통해 항일민족운동의 성격을 지녔음에 주목하였다.
