In this paper, I studied how Veritable records of the dynasty of Chosŏn affected Hong, Myung-hee's historical novel Lim, Kkeok-jeong. Before writing 'The Bandit', the last part of the novel, the author read Veritable records of the dynasty of Chosŏn for the first time and accepted its contents in 'The Bandit' greatly. Among Korean historical novels, Lim, Kkeok-jeong is the first novel which applied Veritable records of the dynasty of Chosŏn.
Being based on Veritable records of the dynasty of Chosŏn, Lim, Kkeok-jeong could show its color as a modern historical novel vividly and increase its reality. On the other hand, it brought about lack of perspective and weakening of the characteristics of the folk. The Auther did not make good use of Veritable records of the dynasty of Chosŏn before he wrote 'The Bandit', and so it brought damage of harmony between 'The Bandit' and the former part. Nevertheless Hong, Myung-hee made important progress in the history of Korean historical novel by applying Veritable records of the dynasty of Chosŏn.
