Lateralized functions of the cerebral hemispheres using the dichotic listening test were surveyed in subjects who consisted of 17 schizophrenic patients(10 males, 7 females), 18 bipolar disorder patients(10 males, 8 females) and 18 normal controls (10 males, 8 females). The results were as follows: 1. As to the comparison of total correct answers, there is no significant difference among each group and between both sex. 2. As to the comparison of correct answers according to the type of test, total subjects has significantly higher scores in word test(32.4 ±6. 82) than in digit test(23. 8±5.67), (p 〈 0 .01). And also, each group has the same results(p〈0.01). 3 . As to the comparison of correct answers recognized through the right ear or left one, total sucjects has significanly higher scores in right ear (30.9±5.51) than in left one(25.3±6.06), (p〈0.05). 4. As to the correlation between the type of test and correct answers recognized through the right ear or left one, total subjects has significantly higher scores in word test than in digit test, in which both right and left (p 〈 0 .05). 5. Although there is no evidence of definitive ear asymmetry in both psychotic groups, bipolar disorder patients show a tendency of right ear dominance in digit test but it has no statistical significance.
