잭 케루악의 자아로의 여행 = Jack Kerouac’s Journey into His Self

국문 초록 (Abstract)

비트세대의 반문화 운동은 지배적인 가치와 태도에 저항한 문화적 그리고 사회적 운동이었다. 비트세대 작들은, 순응, 획일성, 물질주의, 그리고 소비주의를 거부하고, 그와 반대로 비순응성, 자발성, 그리고 개인성을 찬미했다. 이들의 작품은 1950, 60년대 미국에서 새롭게 떠오른 시대 가치의 기록이었다. 비트세대의 대표적인 작가였던 잭 케루악은 『길 위에서』와 『다르마 행려』에서 실제 자신의 모습이라 할 수 있는 방랑자를 창조했다. 길과 산에서의 케루악 자신의 경험을 기반으로 하는 이 두 작품에서, 방랑자는 케루악과 다른 비트세대 작가들이 찬양했던 가치들을 구현한다. 『길 위에서』에서는 계속해서 움직이며 여행하는 방랑자의 모습이라면, 『다르마 행려』의 방랑자는 느린 방랑, 멈춤, 고독, 그리고 명상을 통하여 마음의 평화, 깨달음, 그리고 더 높은 차원의 자아를 성취한다. 전자의 작품에서의 케루악은 불안하고 행선지가 명확하지 않지만, 후자의 작품에서는 거대하지만 비워있는 자연의 공간에서 머문다. 그리고 여기에서 치열하고 진지한 명상을 통하여 그의 여행의 의미가 최대한으로 실현된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Beat Generation’s counterculture was a cultural and social movement which protested against the main values and attitudes. Rejecting conformity, consensus, materialism, and consumerism, writers and members of the Beat Generation celebrated non-conformity, spontaneity, simplicity, and individuality. Their works are a kind of record of these values which began to emerge in the 1950s, 1960s in America. Jack Kerouac, a representative writer of the Generation, created a hobo or bum who can be referred to as a close figure of himself in On the Road and The Dharma Bums. In the two books based on Kerouac’s immediate and individual experiences on the road and in mountains, the bum figure embodies the values which Kerouac and other beat writers celebrate. Instead of identifying himself with a hitchhiker figure in continuous movements and rush into and out of places in On the Road, Kerouac as Ray who narrates The Dharma Bums adapts slow wandering, staying, solitude, meditation to attain the peaceful state of mind, or the essential mind and enlightenment and to reach a greater selfhood. While Kerouac as Sal looks restless, rootless, and anxious and has no idea of where he is going in On the Road, Kerouac is finally anchored in a vast but empty space of nature in The Dharma Bums. His intensive and private experience here leads his long journey to be fulfilled and realized in The Dharma Bums.
