The traditional boundary between diegetic sound (that which comes from within the film itself) and non-diegetic sound (that which comes from outside of the film), the two main methods of sound design in film, has become increasingly blurred with advancements in filmmaking technology. The result is that films are capable of transgressing space based on the location of where the sound in a film comes from. Music that comes from both inside and outside of a film’s narrative, freely crossing the border between diegetic and non-diegetic is called trans-diegetic and can be used for creative effect in films. This sort of sound lends itself to the formation of more creative narrative structures and can provide audiences with a richer interpretation of the meaning of a film. Compared to how often trans-diegetic sound appears in films, there has been little in-depth research into its use and the effects that it can have. Therefore, This study classifies trans-diegetic music into three main categories based on the response it is intended to elicit. The first is for comedic effect, the second is as a combination of dependent and counterpoint functions, and the third is to transition between narrative perspectives via sound effects and sound design. These different use cases will be analyzed by examining specific scenes from films that use trans-diegetic sound in one of these three ways.
Ultimately, it will show that the technique of trans-diegetic sound in films when applied to music can provide viewers with a more colorful interpretation and introduce a range of new possibilities in narrative structure.
