웨스트민스터 신앙고백서에 나타난 행위언약의 본질과 속성 = The Nature and Attributes of the Covenant of Works in the Westminster Confession of Faith

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 한국교회 내에서 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서에 나타난 ‘행위언약’ 개념에 대한 다양한 해석이 불거졌다. 특별히 2023년도 대한예수교장로회(합동) 총회에 관련 사안에 대한 청원서가 올라왔다. 이 청원서의 제목은 ‘웨스트민스터 신앙고백 속의 행위언약 사상에 대하여 사변적인 해석을 통해 성경의 진리를 혼란케 하는 신학 공청회 개최 청원 요청’이다. 본청원서는 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서에 나타난 행위언약의 본질과 성격에 관해 비판적으로 묻는 의도가 강한 청원서이다.
본 연구의 목적은 이 청원서에 대해서 신학적 답변 및 제언을 하는 데있다. 본 연구의 성격은 청원서에 나타난 청원을 요목조목 반박하고 비판하기 위함이 아니라, 오히려 청원의 내용을 상세히 살펴보며 무엇이 더 신학적으로 건전한 해석인가를 타진해 보기 위한 건설적 성격이 더 강하다.
본 연구의 논의 순서는 다음과 같다. 크게 다섯 가지로 살펴볼 텐데 먼저 이 논의 속에 함의된 장단점을 고찰한 후 본격적으로 ‘타락 전 아담의상태’에 대한 논의, ‘영생을 얻기 위한 아담의 능력’에 대한 논의, ‘행위언약과 십계명 사이의 관계성’에 대한 논의, ‘헤르만 바빙크의 『찬송의 제사』내용’에 대한 논의 등의 제목으로 살펴볼 것이다. 마지막으로 앞선 논의를 근거로 실천적 고찰 및 적용을 한 후 글을 최종 요약·정리하며 글을 마무리 짓겠다. 이런 작업을 통해 웨스트민스터 신앙고백서에 나타난 행위언약의 본질과 속성이 선명하게 드러나게 될 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Recently, various interpretations of the concept of the ‘covenant of works’ in the Westminster Confession of Faith have surfaced in the Korean church. In particular, a petition regarding related issues has been submitted to the 2023 General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Korea(Hapdong). The title of this petition is ‘Request for a theological hearing on the theory of the covenant of works in the Westminster Confession of Faith that confuses the truth of the Bible through speculative interpretations.’ This petition is a petition that critically questions the nature and character of the covenant of works in the Westminster Confession of Faith.
The purpose of this study is to provide theological answers and suggestions for this petition. The nature of this study is not to refute and criticize the petition in detail, but rather to examine the content of the petition in detail and to have a more constructive nature to explore which interpretation is theologically sound.
The order of discussion in this study is as follows. The study will examine it in five major ways. First, this study will examine the pros and cons implied in this discussion, and then examine it in detail under the titles of ‘Adam’s state before the Fall,’ ‘Adam’s ability to attain eternal life,’ ‘the relationship between the covenant of works and the Ten Commandments,’ and ‘the contents of Herman Bavinck’s The Sacrifice of Praise.’ Finally, the study will conclude the article by summarizing and organizing it after conducting practical examinations and applications based on the preceding discussions. Through this work, the essence and attributes of the covenant of works as presented in the Westminster Confession of Faith will be clearly revealed.
