The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of maternal mental health and marital conflict on child neglect and children's problem behaviors while examining the mediating effect of child neglect. Child neglect is the most common and the least understood form of child maltreatment. Many studies have concluded that, unlike other forms of child maltreatment, mother related factors like depression and apathy along with family conflict emerge as the most prominent variables concerning child neglect.
400 mothers of preschoolers in C region participated in the survey using questionnaire and data were processed with SPSS and AMOS statistical programs. Results indicated that mothers' depression and marital conflict had significant effects on child neglect and children's problem behaviors. Marital conflict had direct effect on children's problem behaviors, but mother's depression had influences on children's problem behavior indirectly thru child neglect. Overall, the study showed that child neglect can cause problem behaviors among children and proved that child neglect has mediaing effect of marital conflict and mothers' depression on the problem behaviors of young children.
