한국 청소년의 사회적 삶과 자살생각(Suicidal Ideation)

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 한국 사회의 성취체계가 결과하고 있는 청소년들의 사회생태학적 조건에 문제를 제기하고, 그 조건이 결여하고 있는 사회적 통합과 한국 청소년들의 자살생각 사이의 관계를 한국교육종단연구 자료를 이용하여 설명하고자 한다. 이 과정에서 본고는 현대사회의 분업을 경쟁을 피하고 상호보완을 통해 삶을 꾸려가는 ‘유기적 연대’를 낳는 사회체계수준에서의 진화 과정으로 파악한 뒤르켐의 논의에 기댄다. 더 좋은 시험점수라는 동일한 목표를 추구하며 극심한 경쟁에 내몰린 한국 청소년들은 긍정적 사회적 결속을 형성할 수 없는 갈등적 또는 경쟁적 사회관계망 안에 놓여 있다. 이는 한국 사회가 ‘적자생존’의 논리에 기초한 체계통합(사회의 물질적 재생산과 제도적 장치의 재생산)에는 성공했지만 뒤르켐적 의미의 사회적 통합에는 실패한 결과로 파악된다. 중고등 교육과정을 거치면서 체계통합 내에서의 경쟁이 극대화되는 한국 청소년들의 사회적 삶은 사회통합의 부재를 결과한다. 이를 부모, 친구, 학교 선생님들과의 관계에 비추어 한국 교육종단연구의 자료로 분석한 후 체계통합의 논리가 과대 성장한 한국사회에서 관리와 기획자로서 엄마의 역할이 어떻게 체계통합의 논리에서 비롯하며 자살생각에 기여하는지 토론한다. 마지막으로 한국 청소년들이 자살생각을 많이 한다는 것은 긍정적 결속을 만들어내는 관계가 성립하고 지속할 수 있도록 체계의 변화를 한국사회에 요구하고 있으며 그 변화를 위해서 교육은 아이들에게 ‘사회’를 불어넣어야 한다는 뒤르켐의 주장에 주목할 것을 제안한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper raises the issue of social and ecological conditions surrounding adolescents. Mainly driven by achievement system of Korean society, it is hard to find social integration in such conditions. By analyzing Korean Education Longitudinal Study (KELS) data, we try to explain the association between social integration and suicidal ideation of Korean adolescents. In this process, we are in debt to Durkheim’s argument which considers the division of labor in modern society as evolution process of social systems to bring about “organic solidarity.” As pursuing the same end (so-called better test scores), Korean adolescents cannot develop social cohesion or positive social relations but are in highly competitive networks. This shows that Korean society was successful in achieving systematic integration (the reproduction of materials and institutional strategies) from survival-of-the-fittest point of view, but failed to integrate society from the perspective of Durkheim’s argument. While Korean adolescents experience severe competition at school, their lives turn into lack of social integration. With KELS data, we investigate adolescents’ social relations with parents, friends and teachers, and discuss how mother’s role as a planner is associated with suicidal ideation of adolescents in a society where the logic of system integration is pervasive. As a result, the high level of Korean adolescents’ suicidal ideation calls for the change in systems to help adolescents to develop persisting positive social relations. and also reminds us of Durkheim’s claim that education helps adolescents to discover ‘society.’
