In this study, an electric throttle valve system for spark ignition engines is developed for the acceleration control of automobiles. The throttle valve system consists of a throttle valve, a small and high power D.C motor with a motor driver, and a cable reel system that connects the motor and the throttle valve. The motor driver is developed based on an H-bridge PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) circuit. The electric throttle valve system is controlled based on a simple propertional analog control circuit that utilizes the throttle valve position sensor information. It takes about 100msec. for the throttle valve to open from 0 to 90 degree, and the system has a bandwidth about 3 Hz, which is enough fast for a speed control or torque control of internal combustion engines for intelligent vehicle control applications.
