Tongguk Chongun is one of the oldest rhyme dictionaries compiled by Koreans. In this respect it is one of the most important basic data for the study of Sino-Korean. Bu the form of inscription of the phonological writing does not indicate, in a strict sense, the correct manner of Sino-Korean used in 15th Century. Some descriptive system has been intentionally added by the compilers. Therefore, to understand the Sino-Korean of Tongguk Chongun style correctly, the first task seems to be to analyze those elements that have been added to the system and systematization of Sino-Korean at that time. However, the data which we have is not sufficinet to clarify both subjects.<br/>
Before the studying the style of Sino-Korean in Tongguk Chongun, I think it is necessary to grasp the exact meaning of the "Introduction" and to explain its phonological descriptive attitude concerning Sino-Korean. In this respect, this article will analyze the context of the "Introduction" into essential units and will prescribe their theoretical systems and the conception of terms. <br/>

The Introduction of Tongguk Chongun seems to have been written by Sin Suk-chu 申叔舟, a representative compiler, in A.D. 1447. We can summarize the contents of the introduction as follows.<br/>
(1) Speech-Sound is naturally contained in a system from its origin, a system coincides with that of natural phenomena. Letters also take after the responses of man according to the natural law, and thus the system of speech-sound coincides with the system of letters.<br/>
(2) The differences of the speech sounds come from the climate and the nature of the soil, which differentiate man's breathing according to the district. Thus dialects are formed.<br/>
(3) Compared with China, Korea has a variety of climates, and thus its sound system differs. Though Sino-Korean and the sound of Chinese Characters ought to have been the same, because of the above fact, there were defferences.<br/>
(4) According to the King Sejong's intention, Tongguk Chongun was compiled to unify the then confused Sino-Korean and to form a system corresponding to the fixed Chinese sound system.<br/>
(5) Lastly, Sin Suk-chu emphasized, as his private opinion, the value and necessity of phonological writing in Sinology.<br/>
We find that this introduction to the Tongguk Chongun is considerably similar to that of Hung-wu Cheng-yun 洪武正韻. This means that the theoretical system in Tongguk Chongun was influenced by the theories and ideas of Hung-wu Cheng-yun. But it does not mean that Tongguk Chongun was entirely based on Hung-wu Cheng-yun. I think only the theories and ideas of Tongguk Chongun were influenced by the Hung wu Cheng yun.<br/>
