This study is to catch the changes of nutritional status and physical activity in patients with chronic liver disease. To determine nutritional status and physical activity of patients with chronic liver disease, 41 subjects aged 24 to 66 years were classified into 17 hepatitis, 13 compensated liver cirrhosis, and 11 decompensated liver cirrhosis compared with 41 healthy males with similar age and body mass index(BMI) as a control group. Intake of nutrients was measured by 24 hours recall, serum lipids, minerals, and amino acids were measured. Statistical method adopted for date analysis were oneway ANOVA. Major findings and conclusion are as follows: In physical activity, energy expenditure were not different among all groups, however, the intake of total calorie, protein and fat were the lowest in decompensated liver cirrhosis group. The composition of saturated fatty acids was high in control group and monounsaturated fatty acid was high in decompensated liver cirrhosis group. The composition of polyunsaturated fatty acid was not different among groups. Serum triglyceride and total cholesterol were gradually decreased as disease progresses. Especially, compared to the level of control group, triglyceride was only one fourth of control in decompensated liver cirrhosis group. The plasma levels of total amino acid and glutamine were high, and leucine were lowest in decompensated liver cirrhosis group. However, alanine were not different among all groups. Serum levels of selenium(Se), zinc(Zn) and copper(Cu) were the lowest in decompensated liver cirrhosis group. Among those levels, Se and Cu were high in control, Zn was the highest in chronic hepatitis group. These results indicate the need of appropriate nutritional support for patients with chronic liver disease to improve their nutritional state depending on the degree of liver failure.
