한국·미국의 유아교육과 학교교육간의 전이 및 연계 비교 = A Comparison of the Transition and Continuity Practices from Early Childhood to the Primary Grades in Korea and the United States

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 한국과 미국의 유아교육과 학교교육 전이 및 연계 실제를 살펴봄으로써 전이 및 연계교육의 바람직한 방향을 모색하는데 있다. 이를 위해 관련 선행연구 및 문헌을 비교· 분석하였으며, 크게 한국·미국의 유아교육과 학교교육 체제 및 유아·교사·학부모 연계교육 지원으로 내용을 나누어 살펴보았다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국 유아의 경우 초등학교 입학으로 전이가 이루어지는 반면 미국 유아의 경우 학제에 포함된 K(유치원)으로 전이가 이루어짐을 알 수 있다. 또한 한국의 경우 유치원과 초등학교가 각기 다른 교육과정으로 운영되는 반면, 미국의 경우 K부터 12까지 연계된 교과핵심성취기준에 따라 운영된다. 한국과 미국 모두 각 교육과정 내에서 유초연계와 적응을 지원하는 내용이 다루어진다. 둘째, 한국과 미국의 경우 유초연계 프로그램을 운영함으로써 직접적으로 유아의 초등학교 학습 및 생활 적응을 지원한다. 또한 한국의 경우 유치원과 초등학교 교사가 학교 간 방문과 상호 수업 교류 및 협의를 통해 교수학습 및 교육과정에 대한 이해를 돕는 반면, 미국의 경우 프리스쿨· Pre-K 교사와 K 교사가 유아의 정보를 공유할 수 있도록 연계한다. 마지막으로 한국의 경우 부모지원은 주로 유치원에서 부모교육특강이나 가정통신문을 활용하는 반면, 미국의 경우 코디네이터를 활용해 전이과정을 지원한다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 유아교육과 학교교육의 전이 및 연계를 내실화할 수 있는 방안에 대해 논의하고 제언하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to analyze the transition and continuity practices between Korea and the United States and provide valuable information by examining a wide range of studies on the transition process. Literature review and comparative research are used as a research method. First, the transition process on the school system in both countries are reviewed. Then, administration and support for children, teachers, and parents for transition in Korea and the United States are analyzed. Korean children experience school transition when they enter elementary school, whereas American children experience the transition when they enter kindergarten. Under the different systems each curriculum addresses the importance of continuity and provides subjects or theme for helping children’s early adjustment. Research from both countries indicates that transition programs have a positive influence on children’s adjustment to school. Programs intended for direct children’s experiences, teachers’ beliefs and experiences regarding transition, and family experience and involvement are key factors for children’s successful adjustment to school. To create meaningful transition practices and ensure continuity or children, the linkage among children, parents, and schools at the community level needs to be formed.
