영상 자막에서의 인유 번역 = Translation of Allusion in Subtitles

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연구 목적: 본 연구를 통해 영상 자막에 나타난 인유의 번역 양상을 확인해보고 더 나은 접근법은 무엇인지 논의하고자 한다.
연구 방법: 넷플릭스 작품들 중에서 비슷한 시기에 출시되어 전 세계적인 관심을 얻었던 한국 드라마 <오징어게임>과 <지옥>의 영어 자막 속에 나타난 인유표현을 고유명사 인유와 관용어구 인유로 나누어 살펴보았다.
연구 내용: 고유명사 인유의 경우, 음차를 통한 보존전략으로는 원천텍스트에서 의도한 인유의 의미를 전달하기 어려움을 확인할 수 있었다. 관용어구 인유의 경우, 대부분 형태는 생략하고 의미만을 목표언어로 전달하려는 경향이 두드러지게 나타났는데, 이런 번역전략이 지속적으로 사용된다면 작품의 전체적인 느낌과 분위기가 달라져버릴 가능성이 있기에 주의가 필요할 것으로 판단된다.
결론 및 제언: 영상 자막번역은 시간 및 공간적 제약으로 인하여 풀어쓰기나 추가 정보 제공이 쉽지 않은 특수한 상황이지만, 목표텍스트 내에서의 상호텍스트성을 고려하여 대체전략을 활용한다든가, 작품 전체의 맥락을 고려한 보완전략을 생각해볼 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to examine how allusions are translated in subtitles and to discuss better approaches to allusion translation. To this end, allusions in Korean and English subtitles of the Korean dramas ‘Squid Game’ and ‘Hellbound’, which were released simultaneously through Netflix, were extracted and analyzed by classifying them into proper name and key-phrase allusions. According to the analysis result, it was confirmed that proper name allusions were mostly retained through literal translation, and it was difficult to convey the meaning of allusion intended in the source text. In the case of key-phrase allusions, in most cases, there was a noticeable tendency to omit the form and convey only the meaning. However, constant use of omission strategies can change the overall feeling and tone of the drama. Even when it is difficult to translate or provide additional information due to the temporal and spatial limitations of subtitles, it is necessary to consider alternative strategies that consider intertextuality or context within the target text to convey the intended meaning of allusion.
