When metal is machined, the rough parts which are dangerous to treat them and make the quality of goods low are called burr. There are a few kinds of burr : roll-over burr, poisson burr, entrance burr and etc. The size of burr is defined by its length and thickness.
The factors which effect the burr size are the point angle, spiral angle, feed, thrust, torque and the proporties of the metal.
There are the theoretical values of the burr size in drilling mild steel, which was the study by William M. Spurgean, "Reduction of Burr Formation in drilling, SME 75-376".
The object of this study is to find how the torque and thrust of drills effect to the burr size in drilling mild steel. The drilling condition was as follows. H. S. S. drills : 50X50X12mm, H_B=149. testpiece : 118˚ point angle. The feeds were different according to the diameter of drills.
The following results have been found.
1 . The burr size increased as the torque and thrust become larger. But it was smaller than theoretical one.
2 . If the thrust and torque were too amall the burr size becames bigger on account of friction heat.
