During last two decades, a paradigm shift has taken place in the fabrication of functional polymer nanomaterials from bulky features with micron size to ultrafine features with nanometer range. Novel polymer nanomaterials require the potential to control synthetic approaches of polymer nanomaterials on molecular and atomic level. Functional polymer nanomaterials are an important class of nanomaterials with great potential for technologies including energy, environment, electronic device, catalyst, biotechnology because of their unique properties. Therefore, fabrication of functional polymer nanomaterial plays a role of platform technology in order to expand the span of their applications. In this presentation, the recent achievements in the synthetic methodology of functional polymer nanomaterials have been reviewed in the viewpoint of soft template method, hard template method and template-free method. It also details the morphological spectrum of functional polymer nanomaterials such as nanoparticle, core/shell nanostructure, hollow nanosphere, mesoporous nanomaterial, nanorod/nanofiber and nanotube. In addition, various applications of functional polymer nanomaterials will be presented with respect to IT, ET, NT and their fusion technology. Some specific examples are as follows: optically transparent conducting layer, fullerene fabrication using Top-Down approach, conducting polymer electronic ink for chemical sensor application, bottom-up approach for thickness controlled graphene based on a layer-by-layer method, size controlled graphene derived from carbon nanofiber, olfactory receptor functional polymer nanotube transistor for bioelectronics nose, etc.
