초등학교 저학년 영어 공교육이 학생들의 정체성에 미치는 영향 = Investigation of the effects of implementing early English education on students' national and language identity

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Elementary school English education started in 1997, and it has been evaluated as being successful. As the enthusiasm for English education increases due to globalization, the possibility of providing elementary school English education for first and second graders (English education currently starts in the third year) has recently been examined. However, this early introduction of English to students has been criticized for introducing a foreign language that could affect the identity of the learners. Therefore, the current study explored the effects of early English education on the national and language identity of learners. The 1,664 students in both experimental and control groups were surveyed with regard to national and language identity before and after the semester, and only the experimental group was exposed to English education. The results showed that there was no significant difference in identity in the experimental group and the control group. This indicates that early introduction of English does not affect the learners' identity.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1997년 초등영어교육이 공교육에서 처음 도입된 이후 학생들의 영어 능력 및 흥미도와 관련하여 성공적이라는 평가를 받고 있다. 이에 힘입어 최근 국제화와 함께 영어교육에 대한 관심이 그 어느 때 보다 높고 사교육비 중 영어가 차지하고 있는 비율이 높은 환경에서 정부에서는 영어 공교육 강화 정책의 하나로 초등 1, 2 학년 영어 교육 도입에 관한 검토를 한 바 있다. 정책 검토 과정에서 조기 영어 교육 (초등 1,2학년 영어교육)에 대한 우려를 나타내는 측에서는 조기 영어 도입이 학생들의 정체성에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 주장이 있었다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 조기 영어 교육이 초등학생들의 정체성에 미치는 영향을 검토하기 위하여 교과부에서 운영하고 있는 연구학교 학생들을 대상으로 연구를 시행하였다. 연구학교와 협력학교 학생들 총 1,664명을 대상으로 조기 영어 교육 전후에 학생들의 국가에 대한 정체성과 모국어에 대한 정체성에 변화가 있는가를 조사하였다. 설문을 통한 정체성에의 변화를 살펴본 결과, 조기 영어 교육에 학생들의 국가 및 언어에 대한 정체성에 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다.
